Things to get pissed off about today - the Israel edition
Of course, with Israel the media attention is always disproportionate to the importance. And that's on both sides. It's rather unsettling to see my friends getting all bent out of shape when the media DOESN'T report something happening in Israel such as rockets getting launched from Gaza or a bulldozer attack - no seriously, dude got on a bulldozer and tried to mow down Israelis with it - because he's a Theodore Sturgeon fan or something.
Most of the time, these things happen when there are dozens of people getting killed somewhere else. Hell, shortly before Aurora a bunch of Israelis got killed in Hungary. It was Hungary right? I can't remember. Too many American terrorists killing people without political agendas or reason.
America - we're the Dada of Terrorism.
But there was a lot of WHY does the UN not condemn this terrorist attack? What's their agenda? talk about that. Eventually I started replying that I don't see many Jews condemning terrorist attacks that don't happen to Jews and I think most recently more terrorist attacks are not happening to Jews. I was told that it's not "our job" to condemn these attacks. Well, that's nice but the UN is supposed to be doing something besides stating that they really don't like it when people kill each other.
Of course, the UN has a terrible track record with Israel (still holding that "Zionism=Racism" statement from the 1970s against them - yes we are - pretty much every time anyone says anything about Israel acting against the UN - the UN called Zionism racism - it's almost as fun as Rebecca Walker writing about how her mother is a terrible self-centered cretin. Of course, Alice Walker would be a terrible self-centered cretin but her work against genital mutilation tends to make her into a Gandhi for some and that does get respect and deserves respect.) but that does not mean that the UN is supposed to stop everything to acknowledge that it sucks that Israelis are getting blown up by terrorists.
At least when they are outside Israel. Appears that the measures taken ten years back have been quite effective - even as fake "checkpoints" have cropped up on college campuses in order to annoy the shit out of people.
And of course I missed out on that deal where tickets to Israel were going for as low as $300. I didn't have the money, but it would have been nice. Seriously, if I had it I had enough time to buy. Just no money to do it with. Still haven't been to Israel. Really should go with many friends living there now.
On the other hand, I hear it's full of Israelis.
Sorry. Bad joke.
Although I did get into a great conversation with an Israeli couple on Pesach in which they were trying to gauge American attitudes toward them. It reminded me of meeting a grandson of Holocaust survivors back home in Minnesota. He was from France and this was in 2002 when America went stupid about France. It felt strange reassuring the dude that American bullshit xenophobia is only virtual in the case of France - we're all accent whores and French is second only to British - so he probably would be ok.
With the Israeli couple it was more about how the average American loves Israelis when he meets them because they seem "exotic" and there's all that respect about military and it's like they're Jews but they aren't religious or pulling that Woody Allen bullshit so cool. But then American Jews - seriously they seem to be always trying to convince American Jews that they aren't pushy assholes out to steal their money.
It's that one Sabra. We might all know intellectually that you can't condemn people in toto based on one person because that's racist. Or at least ethnocentric. But that One Sabra was one fucking bastard who just pushed and came up with a million ways to rip you off and if he was our roommate, we were calling INS the day after he finally moved out after stopping payment on the last rent check in order to get the fucker deported.
Too bad we didn't know what his last name was. His first was Oren but didn't get the last one.
Ok, maybe more me than we but seriously, that was the worst roommate.
If a guy looks at the apartment and immediately gives you cash for rent and then makes like giving a deposit is a horrible imposition but you should understand because you're a Jew and he's a Jew with a Michael Bolton haircut and an accent, kick him the fuck out. That kind of roommate is no damn good.
I think I was also going to mention Akins, political macros, people who say "I am scared for this country" based on the current politics (like were you people ALIVE for Bill Clinton's presidency? Do you not remember a national discussion on blowjobs that never ended?) and other stuff, but I got distracted by Israel.
Israel - no matter what position you hold - something will piss you off.
